You’ll Belly Laugh & Cry with Comedian Ali Woods
August 6, 2024
/Ali Woods: At the Moment is the reason why you should see comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Initially making it big on TikTok, Ali Woods quit his day job mid 2023 to pursue comedy full time after the success of sold out debut shows at the previous years’ Fringe.
At The Moment marks a new arc for Ali professionally and personally, seeing him hit the stage with the confidence of someone who’s cut their teeth with an in-built fan base but knows what’s at stake now it’s paying the bills. On the personal side, Ali’s fallen in love for the first time – and hates it – because it’s propelled his comedy forward but also made him understand why couples willing bicker publicly in car parks.
On stage a year in to “living [his] dream” Ali’s yet to make the “work” of comedy totally invisible, requiring a bit more concentration in his eyes to accurately deliver the show and rethread things when the audience interject. But, it’s this vulnerability and Ali’s open admission that he “just wants you to like [him]” that makes his comedy so endearing. In fact, it’s a privilege to watch him showcase new material – especially when it’s about first love and awkward hospital visits as a teenager with delayed onset puberty. Imagine what you will.
Ali’s quips lend themselves well to the social media virality he’s known for, but don’t be fooled: you’ll be belly laughing through some of the most honest reflections about insecurity, belonging and romance you’re likely to see on stage.
